Can you remember the tagline at the end of every Skittles commercial? Taste the rainbow.
Well, it turns out that if you actually do eat the rainbow, it could help you lose a ton of weight.
Eating a variety of brightly colorful fruits and vegetables is absolutely wonderful for your longevity and overall health.
It’s also great for burning fat thanks to a family of powerful fat-eating molecules called anthocyanins.
Now, there are actually a few different types of anthocyanins. But there is only one that we’re going to talk about today because this particular flavonoid forces your body to “eat” fat instead of storing it.
This anthocyanin is called Cyanidin-3-O-b-Glucoside, which we’ll just call C3G for short.
C3G is the compound that gives dark blue or purple-colored fruits and veggies their beautiful hues. These are foods like grapes, blueberries, black rice, and purple maize (the dark-colored corn kind you might see around Thanksgiving).
We’ll get to the fat-burning power of C3G in just a second.
But first, let’s look at all of its other healthy “superpowers.”
C3G has been shown to reduce inflammation across the body. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent for your organs.
But of particular importance for you is that C3G reduces inflammation in fat cells.
Why is this so good for your metabolism?
Because this reduced inflammation helps the fat cells regulate themselves much more effectively and avoid disease states like metabolic dysfunction, which can lead to obesity.
On top of that, the reduced inflammation in fat cells can protect them from an unhealthy diet.
C3G is also an extremely potent antioxidant.
Why is that important?
Throughout the course of the day, your cells do a ton of work carrying out their tasks and keeping your body working.
All that work produces waste byproducts known as oxidants, free radicals, or reactive oxygen species (ROS).
Now, if allowed to build up in the body, oxidants can increase inflammation and promote the growth of cancer.
C3G is an incredible antioxidant, one of the best that we know of.
In fact, C3G is so powerful that they have been shown to inhibit the growth of human cancer cells, especially lung and colon cancer.
But let’s get to the good stuff. How does C3G help your body burn more fat?
C3G increases levels of a hormone called adiponectin. This hormone is secreted by your fat cells. Higher adiponectin is associated with better insulin response and also with increases in fatty acid burning.
In fact, in animal studies where they were fed an obesity-inducing diet along with C3G, the animals resisted gaining weight.
But perhaps even more importantly, C3G also increases a crucial cellular enzyme called AMPK.
Doctors call AMPK the “master switch” of your metabolism because it regulates fat storage.
That means that AMPK can turn on or turn off fat storage. The more AMPK you have in your cells, the more fat your body burns.
When AMPK levels drop, fat storage skyrockets.
As we age, our bodies produce less AMPK over time. It is thought that this is one of the reasons why college kids can eat pizza and beer without gaining weight while older individuals struggle with stubborn fat on their hips, tummies, and thighs.
But you can increase AMPK in a couple ways.
First, you can perform rigorous exercise. This type of vigorous movement produces more AMPK in your cells. The second thing you can do is fast. Fasting for longer periods of time, around a day or so, can also increase AMPK.
The other thing you can do is supplement your diet with C3G because it boosts AMPK back to those higher, younger levels.
When your cells have sufficient AMPK, they will start to prioritize fat as their fuel source instead of using their usual fuel of glucose.
