Low Testosterone Increasing in Young Guys

There are lots of things that us guys get to “look forward” to with aging. Things like balding and that first visit to get your prostate checked. Yay. 

But there’s one other issue that was supposed to be reserved just for older guys: low testosterone. 

Low testosterone usually starts to rear its ugly head after 40. From that point on, testosterone levels usually decrease by about 3% each year. 

Low T can lead to things like erectile dysfunction, losing muscle (sarcopenia), and gaining weight.

But it looks like low testosterone, or just “low T”, has started to affect guys much younger. 

In a new article, a couples therapist named Ian Kerner describes how he’s seeing more and more young guys dealing with “diminished libido” and “erectile problems.” 

While those specific issues can be caused by things like weight gain, poor nutrition, bad sleep, medications, and stress, Kerner says it could be low testosterone. 

For young healthy guys, low testosterone can be incredibly frustrating. 

If you’re trying to gain muscle, lose fat, or enjoy a healthy sex life, low T can be discouraging, humiliating, and completely derail your goals. 

How to Solve Low Testosterone in Young Guys

Now, I just want to say first that in serious cases, guys should get their testosterone levels checked by their doctor. In these cases, a doctor may prescribe a testosterone-replacement therapy. 

While this might be the only option for some guys, it carries some pretty hefty risks like reduced sperm production and even testicle shrinkage.

But before going down that road, there are some other natural, easy, and pretty common-sense solutions. 

Kerner talks about several of these remedies:

  • Exercise - But not cardio. Lifting heavy weights, especially movements like the squat and deadlift, have been shown to increase testosterone production. 
  • Nutrition - Fat cells “soak up testosterone like a sponge,” Kerner says. Healthy fats from grass-fed meats, nuts, and certain oils like coconut oil can actually support testosterone production. 
  • Sleep - Your body produces lots of beneficial hormones while you sleep, testosterone being just one of them. Take steps to ensure you’re getting the best possible sleep. 

But there’s one other fix that Kerner recommends: supplementation
