The Secret to Better Sleep - Ritual PM

If you were to ask most people what are the keys to better health, you’d generally receive the same responses—proper diet, regular exercise, not smoking, etc.

The one answer that would likely be missing might surprise you, but it’s a critical component to our health and well-being—getting adequate sleep.

But just how much sleep do you need?

Although the answer can vary from person to person depending upon a number of different factors, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend that adults aged 18 to 60 sleep AT LEAST 7 hours per night (1).

The bad news is that many Americans fail to meet this minimum recommended sleep parameters. 

In fact, according to a recent study done by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) more than 35% of U.S. adults fail to get 7 hours of sleep or more per night.

Although missing some sleep here and there may not seem like a big deal, it can lead to a number of health problems including (1):

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Mental distress

Lifestyle changes can be made to help you sleep better by maintaining regular bedtimes, shutting off all electronic devices, and avoiding caffeine late at night.

But for some people, this still isn’t enough.

Magnesium Glycinate

Nearly half of all adults suffer from insomnia and have poor sleeping habits as a result. We’ve added Magnesium Glycinate to Ritual PM to address these issues because it’s been clinically proven to WORK.

In a double blind study, patients received either 500mg of magnesium or placebo over the course of eight weeks. The results found that those taking magnesium supplementation had less insomnia, better sleep efficiency, and less stress in the form of lower cortisol levels (2).

Other studies have pointed to the potential positive benefits magnesium has on anxiety. Studies have shown that regular magnesium supplementation may help those suffering from mild to moderate anxiety levels (3).

Magnesium is also considered a cofactor for enzymes involved in muscle and nerve transmission (4). This means it can help relax and calm muscles helping you to get a good night’s rest.

Affron® Saffron Extract

Did you know that your mood can play an important role in your quality of sleep?

Having a negative mood can deteriorate your sleeping habits. One key ingredient in Ritual PM can help treat mood disorders, lessen stress, and improve sleep quality in healthy adults. It’s never been used before in consumer supplements until today. 

Just what is this never before used ingredient? We’d like to introduce you to Affron—for the first time ever used in a sports nutrition product.

In a recent study 128 adults with reported mood symptoms were given Affron in 28mg, 22mg, or a placebo. Mood was measured over the course of 4 weeks and the results showed a significant decrease in negative mood and symptoms related to stress and anxiety in those taking a dosage of 28mg per day (5). 

Another study looked at 68 subjects who completed an 8-week double-blind study taking either Affron or a placebo. The results showed Affron improved anxiety and depressive symptoms in youth with mild-to-moderate symptoms (6).

Reducing stress and anxiety, improving mood, and normalizing neurotransmitter activity can are just a few of the benefits you may experience with Affron supplementation.

Sensoril® Ashwaganda

One factor that can affect sleep is heightened cortisol levels caused by excessive stress. Limiting the stress in your life can drastically improve your ability to sleep. Ashwagandha is a key ingredient that has been found to support stress management. As a medicinal plant it has been used around the world for 3,000 years for a number of therapeutic uses (9).

A study was performed on 64 subjects with a history of chronic stress. They were given Ashwagandha supplementation twice per day or a placebo over the course of 60 days. The study also looked at the measurement of serum cortisol levels related to stress. The results of the study showed that Ashwagandha can improve an individual’s resistance towards stress and downregulate serum cortisol levels (7). 

Another double blind study was performed on 39 patients of which half received Ashwagandha while the other half took a placebo. After a period of six weeks, more than 88% of patients experienced a reduction in anxiety compared to 50% who took a placebo (8).

High cortisol levels can be a detriment to many aspects of health—especially your ability to sleep.

Nobiletin Citrus Fruit

Maintaining a proper circadian rhythm is vital for maintaining proper sleep cycles. Going to bed and waking up at the same time can help achieve this for certain people, but others need a bit more assistance.

Nobiletin is one substance that has been found to improve circadian rhythms (10). Nobiletin is a small molecule which has been found to enhance circadian rhythm and improve sleep as a byproduct. 

Another positive effect of Nobiletin is an improvement of insulin sensitivity. A study looked at obese mice were treated with 200mg of Nobiletin over the course of 5 weeks. The participants experienced improved glucose levels, homeostasis model assessment, and glucose tolerance (11). 

Nobiletin has been shown to improve inflammation as well. Studies performed on rats suggest Nobeltin may have anti-inflammatory effects through the suppression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) (12).

Keeping a constant circadian rhythm is key for optimizing your sleeping habits.
